These projects represent more than $30 billion in investment over the past five years, and have afforded Ohio residents lower energy prices.

POWER-GEN conference emphasizes Marcellus and Utica shale plays in growing demand for gas-fired power

POWER-GEN and the Oil & Gas Journal have selected Columbus, Ohio, as the location of the first annual POWER-GEN Natural Gas conference, citing “the region’s potential impact on the energy market regionally, nationally and globally.” The conference will feature top experts in the energy industry, including President and CEO of PJM Interconnection Terry Boston and Executive Vice President of Generation AEP Mark McCullough.

Presenters will discuss issues surrounding technology, operation, construction and maintenance of gas-fired power and production from unconventional hydrocarbon resources, such as those in the Marcellus and Utica shale regions. The program provides a unique opportunity to hear directly from energy professionals with environmental, technical, social and regulatory perspectives.

Industry’s shift away from coal will be big issue for new PJM President Andy Ott

Andy Ott will see many changes as he replaces Terry Boston as president of PJM Interconnection, the regional grid operator for 13 states including Ohio, reports Columbus Business First. Ott said the industry is in transition away from coal “to natural gas and other forms of power,” saying, “[w]e’re seeing a tremendous amount of coal resources retiring.” As shale gas becomes more abundant and affordable, American Electric Power (AEP) “increased its year-over-year natural gas use by a whopping 68.2 percent last quarter,” while coal use declined by 15 percent. Other major issues Ott will face are “the rise of distributed energy” including wind turbines and solar panels, as well as the challenges of using and storing gas and how it differs from coal. OSU Fisher College of Business launches energy-focused executive MBA specialization

The Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University recently launched an energy-focused specialization within its executive master of business administration (EMBA) program, Columbus Business First reports. Centered around the oil and gas industry, classes will look at "the three segments of the oil and gas industry" – exploration and production (upstream), delivery and distribution (midstream), and sales and marketing (downstream). The program "costs $10,000 in addition to the overall EMBA cost of $94,500." Applications will be accepted until October 1st, the article said. For more, read the full story.
